A leading Maryland senator warned this week that the financially troubled Prince George's Hospital system faces imminent shutdown if it does not receive a $5 million cash infusion soon.
The county-owned system serves 180,000 patients a year, many of them poor and underinsured, at Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, as well as a regional hospital in Laurel and other clinics...
A total shutdown would wreak havoc on medical care across the region, forcing indigent patients to flood other regional hospitals. The Prince George's Hospital Center also operates Maryland's second-busiest trauma center.
