more problems with reason

A profound and relevant insight was shown in a Charles Schulz "Peanuts" cartoon strip one day.
Snoopy, the beagle, is lying on top of his doghouse and pondering. He says...

"Did you ever notice,
that if you think about something at 2 AM,
and then again at noon the next day,
you get two different answers?"

Snoopy manages to capture one of the problems with reason, as practiced today - namely, both the meaning of "facts" and the outcome of logical reasoning are context sensitive.
"Reasoning" alone is not sufficient. One has to track not only the math of how the contents relate to each other but also how the contexts relate to each other.
Probably this would require a new kind of computer which was a context processor, not a contents processor.

This is a very familiar problem in Einstein's General Relativity, and it is not insurmountable.

It is also a familiar problem to any mediator or serious negotiator, who knows that the meaning of a phrase or word or step is highly dependent on context.

In Relativity, it is clear that perceptions are a very specific combination of something which might be observed, and some type of distortion of the observer's measuring equipment. This means that the meaning of an observation is relative to the reference frame in which it is being observed.

This effect is terribly misunderstood by people, and misquoted as "Everything is relative" and "no view is right" and "There is no underlying reality." All those are wrong. What Einstein said is that, you need to make corrections to observations that depend on the type of distortion of the observer's world, and, after you do that, any two observers should agree on what they see.

So, there is very powerful mathematical formalism, originally involving "tensors", that allow these effects to be described relatively easily -- compared to the alternative of having to write down 256 components of the curvature tensor every time you said something about it.

This is good news, because people have a very similar problem. What we "observe" is in no way what is actually "out there" -- it is a similar conflation of our current set of biases, prejudices, mental blind spots, stereotypes, and what is "actually there". As in General Relativity, we cannot see our own blind spots, and are unable to detect where our biases have taken over and warped our judgment which, to us, looks just fine.

This, of course, is why "double blind" experiments are good if you can get them, so that the unconscious biases of the experimenter, regardless how hard he or she tries to be careful, do not alter the final conclusions.

Humans are excellent at mentally "papering over" their blind spots with what they think should go there, and not being able to detect that they have done this.

Anyway, "reasoning" alone is not sufficient. One has to track not only the math of how the contents relate to each other but also how the contexts relate to each other.

You could, I suppose, say that,well, yes, this is just reasoning. No, it is not "reasoning" as currently understood and practiced. The current interpretation of reasoning is that space is flat, there is no curvature, scientists are capable of being unbiased, and if A+B=C over here to this scientists, then it will still equal C over there or to a different scientists, without correction for where it was observed.

In fact, a basic assumption of physics is that it doesn't matter where you are, or what time you start, or what direction you are pointed, you should still measure exactly the same physical laws. I'd add, they also assume that you get the same reading regardless how large a ruler you use.

In reality, it seems that there is context dependence, and life is fractal or at least non-uniform, and what is measured at large scales may be exactly the opposite of what is measured at small scales, for the "same" physical event. (See post on "hybrid images" for examples, such as "Marilyn Einstein" or the "happy/angry faces" that look different, depending on how far you stand back from the picture.)

So, at a minimum, it would help if people understand how much of what we think we see is actually a function of our viewpoint, our biases, our mental models, our context, what we had for breakfast, what our spouse had for breakfast, etc.

Responsible observers making careful observations in different contexts will get different answers.

Responsible logical thinkers, starting with the same facts, in two different contexts, will assemble them into different, and possibly contradictory conclusions, regardless how carefully they work.

This is a crucial fact to sort out, and even it is not dealt with well by science, let alone by laymen. All of these effects can be demonstrated, and can be counteracted, but seldom are.

All of these effects can be adjusted for, to remove them from the final conclusion, by different people, but again, this kind of meta-reasoning, or reasoning about the impact of deterministic context in which reason is applied, is not currently the usual practice on Earth in 2008.

Even it is blocked by those who refuse to consider the possibility that there is something that can be improved about the process they use to reach conclusions and to consult with ech other.

There are several other dimensions in which this argument can be supported.

The first is models of any kind of collaborating agents, as I mention in my comment to my last post.

For those who insist on purely academic and "scientific" examples, I'd suggest the model of connecting many legacy computer systems together in a company and trying to get that mess to work.

The "tinker toy" model of little balls (legacy systems) connected by little rods (messaging pathways) simply doesn't work, and breaks down pretty rapidly as you attempt to scale it up. Having each agent determine its own version of "truth" doesn't work.

However, having each one chip in to the discussion about accepting each fact does - in what is known as a "two-phase commit."

A true "distributed operating system" is one in which each agent gives up some level of control and self-determination in exchange for the entire thing working at all.

It's a model that works. It's a model close to the way cells relate in the human body, or neurons in the visual system.

It should be explored more as a model for civilized behavior.




A second strong support are the deviations from Turing's hypothesis. Computability is generally determined on the basis of a Turing Machine model, which is complex to explain but basically says any computation can be reduced to a very long tape of ones and zeros and a machine that reads them and decides which way to move the tape.

The problem with applying that model to human beings is that humans have finite energy, bandwidth, and attention span. In fact, often a very small volume in communication space. Any communication that has any longer-wavelengths in it that fit in such a small box will simply be lost and are not possible. No "long-term" issues will "make sense" at all.

"Reason", if by reason we mean the application of logical steps to a series of strings of symbols, is thereby limited for humans to what can be said, via shared symbols, in a short period of time. And, for the symbols to be shared, they have to at least have been learned, which means they can take no more than 100 years to learn. Again, we have huge limits here on what can ever be communicated that way, even neglecting how fast things are forgotten and partial understandings evaporate. In reality something that takes over a day to communicate is highly unlikely, especially if it has high information content, i.e., is very surprising and doesn't fit preconceived notions.

Furthermore, human brains and perception fill in gaps, leap ahead, resolve ambiguous phrases into stereotyped meanings short-circuiting the whole process. The communication is, in sort, noisy, misunderstood, mis-resolved, and decays rapidly.

The power of reason to accomplish synthesis of meaning and action and synergy in such a context is demonstrably poor. And, we have no other context.

On the other hand, if we go to higher dimensionality communication, such as image processing or higher, many of these bandwidth limitations can be pushed back at least an order of magnitude. These communications would be somewhat holographic, conveying many related idea and their relationships in parallel, not in serial order. This works. "A picture is worth a thousand words".

Actually, I think virtual reality and immersive experiences can be even more compelling and complete than pictures, but that's a different post.

I simply don't see any other conclusion than "Therefore, reason is not a good tool to use for stabilizing civilization and getting the mutual destruction to stop."

Reason may be part of a set of tools, but it is not complete, and I can see no empirical evidence that it works at large scale, at all, ever. Our toys grow more sophisticated, yes, but our conversation about them grows less sophisticated, increasing daily the risk that our toys will be misused.

Frankly, we are stymied by the simple problem of making N plus 1 people more powerful than N people at deciding something or perceiving something. We have what is referred to as "committees" and God help us if the committee size is over 5. We are without tools to help. Unassisted appeals to reason do not seem to do the trick, in realistic contexts.

Third, all reasoning assumes, essentially, that the metric space in which we are working is flat, and that the value at any given "point" in space of "truth" doesn't depend on the pathway we used to get there. Or, more precisely, that the value we show in our tabulator of taking the present facts and reasoning with them to that point should be, we think, independent of the pathway we took. We can use B implies C before or after we use A implies B and end up in the same place.


First, this assumes truth is single valued. Even that is not clear.

Second this assumes that the metric we are reasoning in, some kind of Hilbert Space, is flat -- so that, at the end of a day, we do not end with something like M.C. Escher's waterfall -- that is locally reasonable and globally unreasonable.


In reality this appears to be unjustified. Small factors that we see as "ignorable", in a world with millions of cycles of feedback, turn out to be more important that what seem locally to be "big" factors. Tiny differences result in hurricanes and tornadoes out of "thin air". This matters.

In any Hilbert space, I believe there is always a locally flat coordinate system that works locally, but this does not mean that the entire space is flat, nor that it can be covered by a flat metric.
I find this is the strongest argument at all, involving geodesics and "lines of reasoning", but I fear it is the least accessible, unless the reader has experienced metric spaces in some mathematical context.

In point of fact, reality seems to me to be more fractally complex than flat. From higher up in an organization, the myriad of details that lower levels have to deal with are completely invisible, recursively.

And truth seems to be fractal, in that the size of ruler used to measure it, and the scale of time and space used as a framework, seem to change the measured value. (See hybrid images post).

So, between a world way more complex than desired, and a reasoning power collectively that is way weaker than desired, the ability of reason alone to solve humanity's problems seems in doubt.

This is not to say that reason is not "locally valid".

But to deal with larger scale issues, we need some tool that is not bandwidth limited by the way humans think and perceive and communicate.

I'm not sure what it is, but pretty sure what it is not: It cannot be serial messaging in nature.

What we call "reason" and "reasoning" are incomplete, and will never span the problems we are trying to solve, let alone span them in the time we have left to work on them before we annihilate each other and our planet.
Reason and Science have worked very well on problems that could be flattened into a flat space without damage, such as building machines. They have not worked on problems that cannot be detached and flattened, such as every social problem. This will not be fixed by waiting. It will not be fixed by "trying harder". So, it is doubly cursed - even if "there" made sense and covered all cases we care about, you cannot "get there" from here. Reason alone will not work.
Mindless defense of "reason" as the only pathway to our future
hurts more than it helps, because it prevents adequate research into methods of finding truth that are better than reason, and that converge much more rapidly in the actual world with actual humans, messy politics, corruption, legacy hatreds, etc.


Denial that anything could possibly be better than reason
is a religious statement, based on faith, not solid facts or even solid
theory.

No one could possibly know that, for almost any definition of "better."
This is not an argument to go back to superstition, but an argument to go forward to actual mature capacity to face and deal with hard problems together. Such maturity undoubtedly uses reason, but was not and will not be created by reason. There is something else at work.
The astoundingly poor record of science to cure the worlds ills, and, in fact, to seemingly only solve some at the expense of making others far worse, argues that science is not close enough to the right path, or the right speed, to be left unexamined.
If scientists do not recognize this issue, and continue to paint all their critics as some kind of blind, irresponsible, religious zealots, their arrogance will bring about their own extinction, along with everyone else's.
Seriously - if everyone in Congress simply had 8 more years of math and science, do you contend we'd now have a balanced budget? If they all had dual PhD's in math and science, would we be home free? I have to look at the University of Oxford, which can neither balance it's budget nor select an email system, and say, "No."
No, because the problem is way bigger, deeper, and wider than that. Reason itself only works in a social context, and reasoning is not the process by which social contexts have ever been decided or determined. Reasoning about Oxford will not "fix" Oxford, and I can't begin to grasp the solid basis for an assertion that it could, based on the contrary evidence of the last 1,100 years.
We can't even make committees of 5 that work, people.
It's time to address the actual problem, not this straw man. Something else is wrong. Get "unreason" out of our faces so we can see what it is.

Beyond Reason

(Another letter I sent today to the editor of NewScientist ).

Thank you for the excellent coverage of "The forbidden question - What's wrong with reason?" (July 26)!

I would suggest that our culture has learned a lot from time time of Kant's quote (page 42), "Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another." If culture is akin to a person, what that describes is perhaps an 18 year old young adult.
What we are sorely lacking is the vision of advancing past that to the equivalent of marriage or civilization. They say that a good marriage is one between two adults who are capable of living separately just fine, but who prefer to live together.

They have gone beyond the need for independence and have moved on to mastering interdependence -- what might also be called "unity with diversity." Neither one dominates and both benefit.

American language has no word for that, as "adult" or "mature" has been converted to mean "able to purchase cigarettes and pornography". Clearly this is not a subject of much discussion.

This is extraordinarily relevant, because it is not in the independent reasoning category that our civilization is breaking down, so much as in this re-linking step into a synthesized larger reasoning, perceiving, and acting unit -- a meta-person.

Our schools still teach the "Rambo" approach to great individuals, but across the board we see the start of realization that we need better group work, or team work, or collaboration, or cooperation, or unity, or something over in that general direction. We need something in which no one person (or corporation, or country, or concept) dominates everyone else to the extinction of the other.

It seems to me that many of the attributes of human beings which appear to be "bugs", so far as pure reason go, will turn out to be "features" that allow this meta-synthesis to take place and work. For this we need empathy, the capacity to be unconsciously moved by the others nearby to leave one's mind and hands free to work on the problem at hand while a subconscious unity is messing and mending whatever it is down there that we lack.

And, we need to be joyous about that activity, and welcome it -- both of which have no meaning at all in pure reason. Reason appears suited for computers that wish to network. Something larger is required for humans who wish to civilize each other.

It is not back to authority we seek, not an abandonment of maturity and reason, but going forward to the joyous interdependence that is the basis of civilized living, and true "maturity."

And, yes, this topic is in Chomsky's category of forbidden subjects in the US -- anything even remotely like extolling the virtues of it would be smeared as socialism or communism or terrorism or the smear of the day.

But we know it's right. We can feel that it's right. We are torn in education and teach both "Do your own work" and "Learn to work well with others." The breakdowns in our teams, families, companies, and societies are in this realm, not in "reason". Reason is the messages but reason does not build the communication lines - something else does that. We need them both.

The prestigious US Institute of Medicine, in Crossing the Quality Chasm, notes the critical role that teams play in health care. In fact, in all critical high-risk industries, it turns out that honest, open teamwork and "psychological safety" are required, not optional. Even the US Army leadership doctrine requires superiors to, gasp, listen to their subordinates and build relationships and trust and integrity and character, as being more important than technology to success in battle. Again, if these are part of "reason" they are not very accessible or explicit. There is ample empirical evidence that these human traits are crucial to survival, success, and any plan for thriving instead of mutual annihilation amid fragmentation.

Please stop destroying those values in the quest for the goal you have for "reason."

Science vs. Religion redux

I sent this letter to the magazine New Scientist yesterday, and it seemed worth copying here.

What a wonderful mix of articles and editorials in your July 12 issue, talking of challenges to science, to religion, to Darwin, to genetics, and even to the Templeton Foundation.

Indeed, some overly simplistic models of the world need to be challenged. Sadly, as does religion, the institution of science seems to have many such overly simplistic models, the failings of which are quite visible from outside and quite invisible from inside.

For example, on page 5, in your editorial "A lesson in cynicism", you note "the gulf that exists between how scientists perceive reality and how some politicians do." Again, sadly, you seem to miss your own point that, in terms of political and social reality, the politicians are far keener observers than the scientists, and it is the scientists who need to wake up.

Ahh, perhaps some wags would argue that political and social reality are not real at all, but are, hmm, fictions of some kind that simply have observable consequences on everything from funding to global climate change. Well, which way is it folks? Is everything around us real, or not? Are you arguing for two different sets of rules and laws for the parts of reality that involve humans and the parts that do not? How ... 19th century.

Or could it be that the so called "hard sciences", which are really the easy ones, saw that the same mathematical tools were not very successful at predicting much more complex psychological and social phenomena, and therefore, it must be that what is broken is the phenomena, not the tools? Why all the dumping and scorn of the "soft sciences"?

So the parts of the problem that were deemed irrelevant have suddenly been perceived to have the relevance they always did.

I will suggest, as I have before, that there is indeed at least one common ground to the institutions of Science and Religion, and that is in the area of control structures and determination.

Both Science and Religion have a great deal of interest in the nature of causality.

This is highly relevant, because our understanding of the nature of causality itself is in flux. In the field of public health epidemiology, for example, there are the so called "Epi wars", where those who believe in hard biomedical determinism and causality are literally shouting at those who believe in softer, distal determinism on a larger scale, such as the unambiguous observation that "smoking causes cancer."

Where this seems to be taking us is to the idea that causality is not as simple as we thought, and, like a fractal, what you measure depends on what size ruler you use. On the scale of individual people, smoking is not causally related to cancer, by classic definitions; but on the scale of populations, smoking is clearly a cause of cancer.

This scale-dependence is all around us, but not generally recognized. Even indoor plumbing reflects this, where the trajectory of a given water molecule is determined only by the water molecules around it, and yet, seen from afar, it is generally possible to make the water go from the water tower to the kitchen faucet. At a small scale, non-deterministic, and at a large scale, deterministic. That kind of causality is not comfortable to Science, but permeates social-scale interactions.

So, an advertising giant can methodically change the opinions of "people" without being at all causal, or even visible, at the individual "person" scale.

Until Science can recognize good tools for "seeing" and measuring and modeling this kind of causality, perhaps it is premature to make confident statements about whether the Earth is or is not within a larger influence field of some kind and some scale larger than Earth.

We hardly need to invoke "God", given that our sun is a second generation star (containing iron from the first generation), so alien races could have a 5 billion year lead on us, and farming or raising or making planets might be as boring for them as raising corn is for us.

My overall point is that it is a valid question, for both Science and Religion, to look for "outside influences" on life on Earth. Our tools for doing this are sadly lacking, and it seems bizarre to leave this search to Religion.

The technology of detecting and measuring outside influences would be of great interest on a social or national scale. It's a perfectly valid scientific research question.

We should look at it, and invite both the SETI crowd and the religious crowd to come look with us. Let's not make confident prior assertions about what we will see with instrumentation that is not yet even built. Stop bickering, build the tools, and look. Anything else is like Aristotle talking about how many teeth women have without ever looking to see. Let's not commit the sins we accuse "them" of.

The Other Strength

I think self-help books have it backwards when they talk about how to deal with a crisis by looking for our "inner strength".

I usually agree with him, but even Tony Robbins in his book Awaken the Giant Within, falls into this trap.

Because, I think, the sleeping giant of strength is not "within" at all. It is "without".

This is a kind of important difference if you need to "fall back" on this when times get rough.

It's also pretty important if the lessons here are as relevant for entire nations or religions or cultures falling on hard times, as for individual humans. And I think they are relevant.

It doesn't take a genius to notice that times are getting bad for people, for communities, for work teams, for departments, for companies, for states, and for the whole United States, for example. I'll speak to that since it's where I live and so I have a view from the inside, with all the pluses and minuses that brings to my ability to observe it. (Fish do have difficulty perceiving water, they say.)

Now, we can asssume that all of these groups are not passively sitting by. In fact, it's probably true that many or most of them are making serious efforts to get out of the bind they are in, but those efforts are simply not working.

Well, maybe they are not working because they have the wrong concept of where the problem is. Maybe, they are trying to solve a problem "within" when the problem is "without". If the problem is not in the box, then odds are the solution is not in the box either. We need to look outside the box and see what's there, at least, in case it matters.

Yeah, it matters.

Coming at this from the other side, there are some surprising things that science has discovered recently.

Most of the recent research in Public Health is finding that the more someone is disconnected from society, the worse their physical health seems to be. Of course, this is a loop or death-spiral that feeds on itself, because the worse someone's health is, the more they may find it too much work to be sociable. This is a very solid finding. One of my professors at Hopkins described this as the most robust finding in public health aside from "smoking causes cancer".

And I have heard that solid research shows, for someone 65 years old, making a friend has more beneficial effect on their expected lifetime and health than the combination of stopping smoking, stopping drinking, lowering their cholesterol, and exercising regularly.

So apparently our physical health and psychological strength depend a great deal on how connected we are to society.

Since this well-established fact remains both baffling and surprising to people each time they come across it again, I think we need to revise our mental model of how we think about people, so this is no longer a big surprise, and we automatically take it into account when we plan and end up with more success in coping with a crisis.

So, without getting tangled up in how this could operate, I'll suggest that we get better answers if we think of people as having outside edges that do not have to be the same as where their skin is located. Since we don't know what people are, or life itself is, this is no big loss for a way to think of things.

So, say that the outside boundary of each of us is actually a shape that includes within it all of our close friends. Then it is far more natural to assume that something that happens to a close friend would affect our body or our mind, because that something is now "inside us" where we assume all of "us" is located.

That is, we can salvage the "strength within" approach if we alter the term "within" to include our close friends. We can double check that, yes, now something that happens "within us" can affect our strength and health.

But we have a new capacity if we think of ourselves this way that we did not have before, a new avenue to explore. One thing we can do to get stronger is to increase the strength within the physical skin of ourselves. I'll call this the Rambo approach. It works for a while then it runs out of steam, and that point is where most of us live - on the verge of being out of steam.

The other thing this new concept suggests is that we could also get stronger by expanding our definition of "us" -- by including more people, or more of each person, within that outside boundary of the new "us". We are not limited to having simply one physical body within the outside limits of who we are - we can include other bodies as well.

Again, I have no idea how this might be implemented in biology, but it focuses our attention on the idea that, in a crisis when we need more strength, we should be trying to expand our network of friends, not beating ourselves up because something "inside us" must be broken.

Yes, something is broken, almost certainly -- it's the part of "us" that used to reside in other people out there, letting us all share the same strength.

Unlike the Rambo approach, this approach to body building is "unlimited upwards" -- there is no limit to how strong we can become.

Although this seems like a somewhat unnatural idea, there is an analog in the world of computers. For many years, IBM and Cray and other companies tried to make a supercomputer by making one computer stronger and stronger. That idea ran out of steam.
Then it occurred to someone that maybe they should simply abandon that idea, and look instead at how to take many small computers and hook them up to each other so that they operated as if they were just one biggie-sized computer. That did work, and is what everyone is doing now. I think IBM's last "supercomputer" is actually 64,000 smaller computers working as one, or sort of working as one. Maybe it was 200,000 smaller computers. A lot of them, in any case.

So what is "strength" in terms of getting out of a crisis? One factor is ability to see better what's wrong and what options there are -- that should improve with more people involved. Another factor is ability to simply lift larger objects -- pure muscle power or cash reserves, and again, yes, that should improve or might improve as we add more people.

Another kind of strength that, like Rodney Dagnerfield, "gets no respect" is the capacity to avoid falling into the pit in the first place. And, yes, I can immediately think of several million families that would be in a lot better position today if they had consulted with many people before rushing into a terrible mortgage deal on that new house.

So, having many friends, or more precisely, extending your own identity to include many other people, seems likely to have very positive effects for getting out of a crunch, and for avoiding getting into one in the first place, which is even better. It seems even good insurance has deductibles, and so it's cheaper to not crash at all.

Does this happen on the scale of an entire company? Yep. Look at Southwest Airlines, that has made a profit for the last 69 quarters in a row, while every other airline is going broke. How do they do that?

A rather short-sighted two-page spread in a recent USA Today claimed this was due to Southwest's hedging strategy, where they bought fuel today for the next 5 years, at today's prices -- except they started doing that ten years ago. So now, they are paying basically $1 a gallon for fuel that costs other airlines $4 a gallon.

Well, any idiot can see why they're doing fine. They lucked out.

Oh? Why did none of the other airlines also "luck out"? On digging deeper into this, it seems that in other airlines, various vice president would get outraged if money that could be used for their immediate issues was "spent" on buying next year's fuel. Only in Southwest Airlines could people defer immediate gratification and think long-term.

OK, and keep on going. Why was that true? Or did they just "luck out" there?

No, it turns out Southwest's executives have an astounding approach to life - namely, that they are in it with their employees, all in the same boat, not employees in one and executives in another. The executives have, we might say, an identity that extends out to include the employees.

One sign of this, for example is that, after the World Trade Center disaster of 9/11, when flying was unpopular, all the airlines responded by laying off employees except Southwest, which did not lay off anyone. How did they do that with falling revenue? They cut executive salaries. Was that a clever move? Turns out, yes. Turns out that a company where people thought of each other as friends not competitors has a lot more survival capacity than one where each person is fighting for a larger portion of the pie than their neighbor has. They end up with a much larger pie.

Is this all a coincidence? Did they luck out in doing that? No, we can read corporate literature, or simply look at the company's stock ticker abbreviation: LUV. That says it all.

Do these several million families have the resources so they won't lose their homes? They don't think so, but I do. Suppose each family invited a second family to share their home, and split the mortgage payments -- would that help? You betcha.

So why don't they do that? Aren't they "lucky" enough to think of it?

This is a damned good question, worth an entire other post. Why indeed. What have we done to ourselves that, when faced with a crisis, we would rather sink than turn to each other for help? In fact, in the home-sharing solution I suggest, there is no "charity" or "hand-out" -- just two families meeting their own needs.

Maybe, our congress should use all that money they just decided to spend on this crisis to address the real crisis, that has nothing to do with mortgage terms, and everything to do with why two families can't live together in peace.

They do this in other places, in other countries, so it's not impossible for some genetic reason.

Of course, to accept that possibility would also suggest a possible solution to the crisis hitting the entire national economy -- maybe we should look for a solution that's cooperative instead of competitive, with other countries.

I can hear shrieks and see people running from the room.

We need to seriously consider what mental model we have of strength, both to get out of a crisis, and to avoid getting into a mess in the first place. Would the whole US be in a better position if we were better at listening to advice of our friends? Hmmm...

The answer is right here in front of us, everyone. It doesn't require "an act of Congress" or an act of God to implement it. (Although maybe an Act of Congress declaring that multiple family dwellings were suddenly legal regardless of local zoning would help in some wealthier neighborhoods.)

We would get way, way , way more bang for our buck by addressing that problem, of why we don't work better with the external parts of ourselves. Why do we take "broken apart" as if it was the normal state we could do nothing about?

Good question. Very good question to look at more.

On freedom of self, and freedom from self

There is a puzzling but important relationship between us and ourselves.

Even that statement sounds peculiar, but we all know what it means to say, regarding some New Year's resolution, "I couldn't get myself to do that."

Or maybe, "I found myself doing exactly what I didn't want to do."

How can we make sense of this? I think I found a way, and am curious what others think.

It seems to me, like so much of life, that there is a property here that depends on the time-scale or "zoom factor" used.

In the short run, say the course of a day or two, "we" (you know who you are, the one reading this) are basically captive to our "selves". This "self" has a lot of inertia, and maybe it is carried around by the animal host we inhabit or are associated with from birth.

In any case, way more than we like to admit, we are pretty much predetermined in the short run by the operant conditioned and habit-driven self. This is not such a bad deal, as anyone who ever fell asleep on a horse, or semi-sleep at the steering wheel, felt when looking up and realizing they had ended up at home.

So, short run, "we" are captives of the "self."

But, long run, provided (big if) we can maintain constancy of effort and purpose, we can reshape and remold the self into a different self.

So, like silly-putty (or starch-colloid), if we try to move it slowly, it flows; if we try to move it rapidly, it is like a rock.

Now the last part of this puzzle is that life is very noisy on many scales. So, it is good that we have a "self" to stabilize us across the vast range of impulses and things that look enticing at that second. But we are also faced with noise on the long-term scale. If we float free, we cannot maintain constancy, or even a sense of direction.

So, the only way to be "free" of self is to connect up with a larger social group that has a much larger intertial "self" than our own. Then, we can maintain constancy long enough, with the help of our new friends, to overcome and retrain and recondition our "self" to something different.

Except that, even then we are not totally "free", as we had to partially adapt the life of the social group we used as a reference. Within that domain, we are "free" to reshape ourselves,
over the long haul, which in turn will dominate "us" in the short run.

Stephen Covey ("The 7 habits of highly effective people" and "the 8th Habit") talks about the "freedom to play the piano" -- which is a freedom in the long run that has to be earned by diligent sacrifice and obedience and subjecting oneself to discipline in the short run.

But, without the short run sacrifices, we never end up with the long-term freedom to play the piano as we desire.

There is also the idea of freedom within a corporation or large group, where the most freedom is obtained by being willing to take part in a two-part deal -- we allow ourselves to be dominated by some authority, and the authority in turn allows itself to be guided by us and by it's perception of our interests and well being (not its own.) If BOTH parts are there, and both parties agree to be subject to that restriction, then ALL of us become free to be powerful.

These are restrictions like bones, that make a runner able to go faster than a jellyfish, by having rigid parts. Rigor frees us, rigidity may or may not bind us.

On ET's, evolution, and corporations

In the May 31, 2008 issue of New Scientist, NASA Historian Steven Dick argues the following:

WE HAVE been hunting for intelligent life in the universe since Frank Drake inaugurated the first modern radio search in 1960. So far, no interstellar communications have been detected,...

I am a fan of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), and I served as the official SETI historian before Congress cancelled NASA's programme in 1993. I disagree with those who say that after almost 50 years we have searched long enough. The truth is, we have searched only the tiniest part of our own galaxy in only a limited frequency range. More to the point: we may have been looking for the wrong thing.

SETI scientists are not known for a lack of imagination, but even they may not be thinking big enough. They consistently acknowledge that alien intelligence would likely be older and more advanced than our own, a belief borne out by what we know about the universe. Yet they have done nothing to incorporate this into their search. Instead, they continue to look for biological creatures similar to us - ignoring the likelihood that any intelligence in the universe has evolved beyond biology.,,

The study of terrestrial cultural evolution has made great progress in the last few decades, but it has been controversial - think E. O. Wilson's sociobiology, Richard Dawkins's memes, Daniel Dennett's universal Darwinism, and theories of gene-culture co-evolution - and we still don't have a robust theory. There is no doubt, though, that wherever intelligence exists, cultural evolution takes place.

So I propose what I call the "intelligence principle": that the maintenance, improvement and perpetuation of knowledge and intelligence is the central driving force of cultural evolution, and that to the extent that intelligence can be improved, it will be improved. Applied to life in the universe, this means that ETs will have sought the best ways to improve their intelligence, and in doing so may long ago have advanced beyond flesh and blood to artificial intelligence (AI). Futurists such as Hans Moravec and Ray Kurzweil have predicted that a similar transition from biological life to AI will happen here on Earth in only a few generations.

Given these considerations, it seems inevitable that we live in a post-biological universe, and that SETI may not make sense unless we find ways to take cultural evolution seriously.

...But the chief weakness of the idea may be that it is not bold enough, perhaps too closely tied to our current world view at the dawn of the computer age.

... Informed by AI and cultural evolution studies, SETI can expand its possibilities in new directions, and in its turn, the study of the long-term future of AI can become more than idle speculation.

The author's leap from humans to culture seems to miss at least one level of trans-human life on Earth - the things we call "corporations." I am quite serious about this theoretical biology question.

Corporations satisfy all the definitions of "life" in any basic biology textbook but are clearly above and beyond human beings, with a life of their own, their own legal "rights" and identities, etc. And, despite a stunning lack of visible intelligence, compared to even an average human, they are terraforming the planet and pushing aside individual humans. With the advances in Artificial Intelligence the author suggests, Corporations could soon outgrow their need for biological humans as a substrate.

For all we know this has already occurred.

I would suggest the burden of proof is on anyone who thinks corporations will not be the surviving life-form on this planet, at the rate they are simultaneously growing and destroying the ecosphere that humans require to live -- somewhat like oxygen breathers displaced the methane breathers on earth.

The implications of this trend are worth pondering.

I was an astrophysics graduate student of Professors Frank Drake and Carl Sagan, back at Cornell University in the late 1960's, at the Center for Radiophysics and Space Research (CRSR), which we affectionately told people stood for "Charlie's Radio Service and Repair." This center ran the 1000 foot radio telescope dish in Arecibo, Puerto Rico and was the hub for SETI.

So, I have been pondering these questions for well over 40 years now -- "If they were there, what would they be doing that we could detect, and how could we detect it?"

And, another question, "What frequency should we be looking at? Radio waves? Light waves? X-rays? " Frank Drake told us in class that every time we opened up a new window in the spectrum and looked through it, we saw totally new and unexpected things.

Now, Radio Astronomers have some famous lore and failures, one of the largest sobering events being the fact that the third brightest objects in the radio-frequency sky, after the sun and the center of our galaxy, were missed entirely for something like a decade or longer.

The reason for not seeing these "Pulsars", intensely bright strobe lights in the night sky, was basically that we were so sure there was nothing that we short-circuited that channel. Only when a female graduate student persistently asked why this filter was in there and, over objections, removed it, were pulsars seen and recognized at last.

I repeat that story because it seems to me such an analogy to our social inability to perceive that the business entities called "corporations" are actually alive. Or, for those whose minds are made up and are unwilling to consider that notion, let us say that corporations "might as well be alive." (M.A.W.B.A.)

Corporations do all the things "life" does - consume energy, interact with their environment adaptively, reproduce, etc. They have been up to now based on a substrate of human beings, but they are no more dependent on human beings than they are dependent on their founders remaining part of the corporation. In fact, it is part of the typical life-cycle of corporations to grow beyond their founders and ultimately buy them our or simply kick them out.

Can the humans be replaced, progressively, by computers? Sure. Already if you call most large corporations, you speak to a computer not a human.

The corporations GE and GM are good examples. General Electric once was the flagship maker of consumer goods, but I read a few weeks ago that they are considering selling off the consumer arm of their business entirely. They've grown beyond an interest in dealing with individual humans or individual human issues, and only want to interact with other corporations.

General Motors has, I believe a larger staff of economists and forecasters than the US Government. Despite this, their net perception of the world automobile market is roughly as good as what my wife would call "a sack of hammers." The fact that oil prices have risen and that humans are turning away from gas-guzzlers is just incomprehensible to them. They clearly live and move in a different world than human beings do.

So, apparently, does the US Economy, which has been repeatedly referred to as "two-tiered" - one tier being, you know, the ecomomy that used to matter that involved individual humans, and the other tier being the economy that corporations live in. Over the last few decades, these two economies have diverged, and now good news for one is almost always bad news for the other. the Wall Street Journal is filled with articles noting, for example, that "the stock market fell today on news that wages rose last quarter."

And anyone who thought these corporations were tied to their founding locations or humans has been oblivious to them simply "relocating" abroad, moving their existence onto the back of a new set of cultures and humans.

The corporations act, as I said above, like independent life forms as they increasingly take over the world and reshape it to suit their perceptions of their needs, which as I also said, are typically remarkably uninformed perceptions.

So, we have a window, perhaps another decade, perhaps even two decades, during which corporations evolve higher intelligence and reduce their need for any humans at all. They probably have as much appreciation of and loyalty to their founding species as the average teenager has to his or her parents and grandparents -- none.

During this window, perhaps our last chance as a species, we might consider taking some time to reflect on what it is about being human which is, as computer people would say, "a feature not a bug."

If, indeed, the only thing that really matters in the big picture is the abstract, disembodied intelligence that cubicle-farms and board-rooms cater to, then it's probably good-bye to humans. Computers will be able to do that better within our lifetimes.

On the other hand, if what ultimately matters involves deeper human issues, from compassion to love to connectedness and creative collaboration, then perhaps humans will be tolerated a bit longer by our corporate master species.

Humans, after all, have been shaped by subtle forces in this universe for a billion years or so, and corporations have only a few hundred years experience. Perhaps those "emotional" and"human" qualities are not bugs in a "perfectly pure abstract intelligence"but are in fact the part that should be enhanced in an"advanced civilization."

Already, some companies are discovering the joys of "theory Y" management, and the fact that employees, given the chance, can in fact bond as humans and create structures that are far more perceptive and creative and fun to work in than the classical cubicle farm life.

There is some urgency, this analysis would argue, to fleshing out what those superior human qualities are, particularly the ones that have been disparaged by business and to a large extent, scientists. Perhaps corporations are "throwing out the baby with the bath-water."

If we don't identify and utilize those features of our humanity, they will be trampled into the dust as rapidly and surely as a small neighborhood grocery store with a Walmart's going up across the street.

I'll close by recalling a set of signs I saw one summer in the 60's while touring England by bicycle. We came first to a huge sign with nothing on it except an exclamation mark. We paused, scratched our heads in puzzlement, and went on. Shortly thereafter we came to a sign that did make us stop entirely.

It read simply "You have been warned."

Why we need some kind of God Lab

( An open letter)

While I understand the emotions that creationism evokes in scientists, I am concerned that broad-brush smug criticism is equally non-scientific, making valid research questions suddenly unacceptable for reasons of political correctness.

One such question, it seems to me, is the question of whether there is outside interference and manipulation in the evolution of large social systems, including the US Stock Market, Iraq or any other small country, and the Earth as a whole.

I agree instantly with the invalid nature of Intelligent Design's assertion that it can't think of how complexity arose, so it must be God's work. But by the same logic we must reject scientists saying that they can't think of who could be manipulating large social systems, so it must not be happening.

Before being drowned in a sea of knee-jerk demands to produce some falsifiable conclusion, I'd like to suggest that it is very fair question to ask "If there were such social manipulation going on, at any scale, would our current tool kit allow us to detect it or reject it reliably?" I think the answer to that question is a clear "No."

A second question then is "Would it be interesting to have such tools?" I think the answer that question is a clear "Yes", because we have identified a blind spot in science's vision, in an area of significant political and economic interest.

Or, on the flip side, there could be very applied research in how much we could manipulate the affairs of some social system before risking being caught in a non-deniable way.

Antipathy to such research seems more lamentable than laudable.

Relationships in First and Second Life


It seems that a good fraction of the books I see at Borders deal with either the management of one self or the management of one's relationships to other people.

By "management of" I mean "controlling or influencing or changing the behavior of."

I realize that I've been a perpetual student, probably having taken 200 or more college courses in one thing or another, and yet, I'm trying to think of one lecture at anytime in school, at any age, talking about how to think about and manage my own personal relationships. I'm not recalling any.

This seems curious. Like knowing how to swim, or how to fall without getting hurt, or basic first aid, or basic hygiene, these seem skills everyone needs, a lot, in important, life-changing ways. With the exception of hygiene, and "don't fight in school", all of these are similarly neglected.

In fact, when I think about the named relationships we all know about, there are personal relationships (friend, lover, spouse) blood relationships (mother of, son of, brother of), and power relationships (boss of, coworker, team-mate of , dominant, submissive, superior, inferior), and it sort of stops there. I'm sure I'm missing many and maybe only revealing my ignorance and illiteracy here.

This is not a very rich or robust vocabulary for such an important subject and doesn't facilitate difficult conversations about facets of relationships that could be improved and how to do that.

So, I'm wondering how the virtual reality world Second Life might help us deal with this sort of conversation.

One thing I did learn to do in a recent class, SI689, is at least ask the question: in what way is Second Life "better than being there?" The goal should not be to get up to even with real life, but to tremendously exceed it in some factor or facet.

Let me give just one example. In Second Life (SL) I manage an animated character on the screen, which I come to think of as "me", my avatar -- just as I manage one person and physical body here in real life. I move it, dress it, walk places with it, fly places with it, etc. The flying is "better than real life", as is teleporting almost instantaneously to other locations.

But those are only improvements on real life, not quantum leaps. (The term is absolutely wrong, since that would be the smallest step possible, but you know what I mean: a huge leap.)

So here's more of a quantum leap: One thing I could do in Second Life is to run two different avatars, simultaneously. There is no equivalent in first life. SL doesn't make this easy, although it could.

In fact, lets say that we effectively get two keyboards/joysticks/input-devices: one for my left hand to run one avatar, and one for my right hand to run the other avatar. Let's say I do this a lot, so that, after a while, the motion of my marionette/puppet avatars is automatic and I don't need to think about it, it just "happens" the same way moving my hand happens now.

What exactly would be the effect on "me" to do this, now having two different bodies simultaneously? And more interestingly, how would these two characters "relate" to each other? Say there were times of day when just one or the other of them was active on-line,
to develop a personality and seamless fluency in movement. Each one would develop a certain "personality" as has been discussed elsewhere in the literature.

With some very fancy eye-wear, perhaps the left brain would control one of these dominantly, and the right brain the other. Or at least the mix of dominance would be different. And, again unlike real life, (mostly), one could be, let's say, female and one male. That alters the chemistry and confuses the issue, so for the moment say they are both the same sex as "you" and same gender as "you". (Sex being physiological and gender being behavioral).

Now, here's the key question -- how would or could these two avatars "relate" to each other?
And what could we learn by experimenting with that?

Once, my college apartment mate was looking for a roommate, before selecting me, and he told me he had one main criterion -- if there were two of this person, would they get along with each other? Some people we could think of would fail that test, insisting on being dominant in everything. Some people would be unable to work for themselves as a boss. Interesting.

I'll ponder more about this, and try it out, and report back what I find.

Before I leave it, one last thought on a related subject. Consider learning to play the piano, correctly, with two hands. At one stage of development, each hand has to practice separately.

At a more advanced stage, each hand is playing "at the same time" but it is really coordinated parallel play, the head multiplexing between a fast check left hand, right hand, left hand, right hand.

At a more advanced stage, the hands effectively disappear, and the head is more involved playing, say, two voices -- where the voices may be at one point on separate hands, but could cross over or interweave between fingers on each hand. It is the voices that have life and expression, not the fingers or hands at that point, which are still present but sort of in the background in some way, distant from consciousness.

It makes me wonder if human relationships could be the same way -- initially two consciousnesses, each confined to one body, but ultimately two voices, in some way each
occupying both bodies or spirits. Identities close, then merge, then refactor differently into voices not notes.

This merging and acting with one heart, on spirit, one mind is a key concept to successful sports teams, military teams, work teams, etc.

What words would we use to describe the relationship of the hands at each stage of development? Dominant? Partner?

You see what I mean about the lack of an adequate vocabulary to capture a relationship and describe it to someone else who will know immediately and unambiguously what you mean.

If we can't describe relationships or in some way measure them, even subjectively, how can we possibly take seriously an effort to "improve" them? How would we know if something is "working" or not?

It is an interesting experiment, in Second Life or in real life with just sock puppets -- if this is "you" and this is "the other person", add dialog and show me what a typical discussion over some conflict goes like now, versus how you wish it would go.

Playing both roles simultaneously makes this a more interesting experience, it seems to me.

On things you have to believe to see

Why do people disagree about what they see?

If they disagree does it mean that at least one of them is wrong?

The short answer is that even very competent trained observers are often wrong about what they see, and, in many cases, even if they perform flawlessly, it turns out they are wrong.

And, very importantly, these differences in perception, combined with a lack of understanding of the causes of them, have led to many arguments, battles, and probably entire literal wars.

And, has been so well captured in Thomas Kuhn - The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, totally new paradigms are often strongly ridiculed and not "seen", let alone "obvious" to the vast majority of competent scholars early in the lifetime of the idea.

And, from long experience with the insidious impact of unconscious bias, even among very highly trained researchers, the standard in medicine is a "double blind" study, to get around the well known tendency to see what we expect to see, or to see what we want to see - or not to see things that would be very painful if seen. In The Mismeasure of Man, Stephen Jay Gould
describes extensive case studies of how things scientists were sure were true about humans have proven to be patently false.

Human vision is a very tricky thing, swayed by peer-group pressure, swayed by biases from fears and desires and prior experience and conditioning, subject to numerous kinds of reproducible errors at best. Yet, it is good enough for us to get by, mostly.

I do not share the view of those who swing the pendulum to the far side, and therefore claim that
"nothing can be known" or that anyone's opinion is as good as anyone else's, "because it's all relative and subjective" anyway. Even Einstein, so often misquoted, showed that with the corrections and adjustments he proposed, the seemingly conflicting views of two observers could be in fact perfectly reconciled.

We do not know and cannot see "everything", and at the same time, we do know and can see "something" -- the truth is in that inconvenient middle ground.

Some improvements can be made by multiple observers working together. Again there are traps and pitfalls, such as "Group Think", or tyranny of the majority, and suppression of minority or inconvenient views, but the truth is neither pure white nor pure black.

Because humans heavily use their visual processing circuitry to do "thinking", and attempt to "see" things meaning "understand them", the failure modes of this circuitry are of interest to us all. Further, humans tend to put strong judgmental values on top of what they perceive as "true" or "obvious" - so social action often follows from such broken vision.

Furthermore, groups of humans tend to influence each-other's perceptions in invisible ways, so that the entire collection of them, starting perhaps with one undecided state, can break into "camps" each seeing something different more and more as time evolves. Differences from other "camps" are viewed as some kind of enemy action, further suppressing rational discussion. Once very widely held, these mistaken views latch in and lock down, and b ecome shared norms and prejudices, filtering further information gathering to only support themselves and there becoming self-supporting, and, in fact, attacking efforts to dislodge the majority error.

Most of this, it turns out, is really a function of perception, and is as true of robots trying to "see" something as it is of humans.

What do we make then of a person who "see things" in a way different from our own? Or a person who sees entire things we don't even see at all, and don't believe are there? Are they to be considered "crazy" or "heretics"?

The human visual system has both feedback and feed-forward, and learns over time. As a consequence, things that we really need to see, we can often learn to see easily. A botanist, glancing at a plant, or a professional IT person, glancing at software, can often see a huge amount that a layperson cannot see at all, even when instructed where to look. We don't have to train our eyes, they figure out we need to see stuff and show it to us dynamically better with time.

But this system in humans is linked into the pleasure seeking and pain avoiding systems as well. Some views or perceptions are essentially certain to lead to painful memories, or to actions that will produce pain and have produced pain in the past, and our visual systems happily and automatically reshuffle neurons so that the painful perceptions and conflict is reduced. Often, the systems reduce pain to zero by making certain perceptions simply impossible for us to see any more. If we're not testing for this, we can easily miss the effect.

So, for example, if a person feels extremely insecure and vulnerable, their perceptual system may figure out that most complexity or harshness causes intolerable pain, and may decide, on its own, to shut off perception of complexity or threats. The person has been moved, by their visual system, into a very simplified world where nothing is complex and everything is safe, despite what others see. At the extreme, we classify such people as "mentally ill", but most of the intermediate states -- inability to cope with complexity -- simply turn into types of "political" viewpoints where simplistic, black and white views of the world are desperately clung to and become self-righteously self-reinforcing by blocking out all contrary information and often blocking out all those who disagree with the conclusions as being "enemies".

There are many counter-measures we can take, such as pooling notes, or all agreeing that we should be polite to those who disagree with us or espouse contrary opinions, and hear them out. The trend these days in the USA seems to be to shout them down, not to hear them out, however.

On a personal or team or department or national level, providing a forum for different "sides" and hearing out each other, where possible can avoid many errors we would later regret. This too, the essence of civilized discourse, is out of vogue in the US, where even allowing the impression of uncertainty is considered a sign of "weakness" and inappropriate in a "leader".

The literature of high-reliability systems is clear that suppression of dissenting opinions is a fast path to disaster, but this result is not widely understood, even if known.

I think it is probably correct, although not necessarily "safe" to say, that at least half of what each of us believes to be "obviously true" is, in fact, not true. The problem is, we don't know which half. And, most adults are not very happy to have one of their errors pointed out to them.

Trained and practiced collaboration in a psychologically safe environment can get around most of these problems, but is hard to do and not taught in school. Most "meetings" of "committees" at work are not best characterized as a sincere and loving search for the truth amid seemingly conflicting interests and viewpoints.

Despite the dismal track record, it is still possible to actually get consultation to work, if properly facilitated, and always worth it.

Many of the current catastrophes in the news could have been avoided entirely if widespread consultation was the norm. People would not have bought into ridiculous mortgages, for example, if they had consulted with the community first.

Why and how we have ended up at a point where asking for advice from our own people's experts, whatever people those are, is no longer "cool" is a topic for another day. Part of it is certainly tied up with a definition of "male behavior" that approves driving around for an hour lost instead of stopping to ask directions, and larger scale analogs to that activity on a departmental, corporate, state, or national level.

The title of this post, "On things you have to believe to see", is a reference to a phenomenon in machine-vision known as "model-based perception" -- which is in turn modeled after how humans perceive their visual and audio stream of data that floods their brain.

There is always way more information than can be processed by the fastest processor, much of it ambiguous or supporting conflicting interpretations, and much of the important part being of lower volume than the noise.

In response to that machines (and humans) simplify life by holding an internal mental model of the world until they can hold it no longer, and filtering the fire-hose of data down to that which resolves along the axes of that simplistic model, discarding everything else.

The good news is that, if the model is correct, or nearly correct, this approach discards the noise and keeps the signal, making life good.

The bad news is that the very same stream of data could support hundreds of thousands of interpretations equally well, and the one we have may not be even close to the best interpretation of the data.

However, any model at least lets us operate and make decisions quickly, and get feedback if we are wrong -- and in the real world, that approach usually works far better than the "paralysis of analysis" and attempting to understand everything all the time.

As thousands of studies have shown, we will tend to see what we are looking for, and tend to suppress contrary information. A radiologist, asked to look at an X-ray of a chest, will see different things if asked "Is this a tumor?" than if asked "what do you see here?" Which one is the better question "depends."

Another thing that is fatal to animals and humans, aside from inability to operate quickly, is inability to hold a course of action -- ie, dithering, or continually second-guessing an opinion. Our brains automatically try to avoid that, once we have formed a perhaps arbitrary decision, by selectively showing us data that support that decision, and selectively masking out or hiding data that contradict it. The result is, even if we are wrong, at least we are self-consistent for a while.

Confidently taking the wrong exit off the expressway is probably safer than continually changing lanes as one tries to decide if this is the right exit or not. The problem in most cases will become obvious later, and be sorted out then.

Is it a good thing that we are blind to and oblivious of our own frailty of perception and judgment? Probably, in many cases, we can at least operate at all if we act as if we knew what we were doing.

The downside is that misconceptions, errors, bias, prejudice, and hatred can all become self-fulfilling features of our lives all due to inability to perceive correctly what is going on around us, as well as due to the harsh way we often treat those whose views are contrary to our own, or foreign, or incomprehensible to us, or "clearly wrong."

This mishmash of human emotions, behaviors, perceptions, and prejudices, and norms regarding them is part of the culture that has to be over-ridden in order to establish a "lean", Toyota-Production System type high-reliability operation. To get high quality, reliable product out the back door, we need to have a psychologically safe, humble, listening culture at the front, where it's safe to say "I don't know" or "Can anyone help me?" or safe to say "Er, excuse me Doctor, I realize you are sure of your own viewpoint, but aren't we doing the LEFT arm today?"

We override such civilized culture only at high risk of taking the wrong exit, the wrong arm, or the wrong war needlessly.

My TPS report



It may be that TPS was great for Japan in 1950, but that it's actually easier for the US to simply leapfrog that and move directly to the following stage.

So, yes, it may have taken Tibetan monks 30 years of hard labor to achieve certain states, but if we can get there in 5 minutes using a biofeedback device, lets do that.

This is important. At the rate global situations are evolving, from the economy to climate change to antibiotic-resistant organisms, we don't have 50 years to spend on this step. Like GM looking at a 6-week model conversion time, we also need to break the concept that "this is as fast as it could possibly be" and realize there is probably a 1-minute die-change model we are just not yet seeing because our disbelief is blinding us.

But, how do we search for it effectively?

A technique from physics can be helpful here. We may not know exactly what the object is we are seeking, but we may still be able to say some things about it , such as it is "smaller than a breadbox, whatever it is." Or maybe "It is red, whatever it is." This can help cut down the search space, as in the game "Twenty Questions." With enough such clues, we can often zero in on the right ballpark and from there complete the search by inspection of all the remaining choices.

Almost certainly, for example, no one person can comprehend the answer to this question, so we can be reasonably confident that a team-approach to searching would be at least helpful, if not indispensable. I'll assume for now that it takes a synthesized N-person brain to solve this problem, and we are to the solution as termites in a nest to concepts of air conditioning - we can do it collectively even though we couldn't describe it in words if we tried. There are lots of things like that, from catching a ball to knowing when to go at a 4-way stop sign intersection.

We need a team of people who have seen enough breakthroughs and factor-of-100 improvements that they believe these things can happen, even if they are totally not obvious at the start, and even if everyone else is stuck in "This is the best it's possible to do" mentality. We can overcome each other's residual disbelief and use the multiple-coals-burn-bright power to stay enthusiastic for this uphill search.

If we don't look for such solutions, it decreases the odds we'll find them. So, we should be looking, at least part time, unless that totally distracts us from our day jobs. At least some people should be actively working on this question at least some of the time.

I volunteer to "lead" the effort, ie, keep it going and shop it around and keep track on a wiki or something of what fragments of wisdom we've been able to assemble so far on the space-frame, kind of like reassembling fragments of an exploded aircraft, one at a time, until we can see what shape they are making and understand at last what has happened and is happening on Earth.

But the "team approach" is pretty well given. TPS is all about massively parallel algorithms with emergent solutions. We just need to figure out really easy steps at each level that, when deployed and acted on, result in the emergent solution behavior we want. That's one aspect let's lock down for now.

A second aspect I would suggest we start with as our "seed" is that we're looking for a recursive, symmetric solution if there is one. Life is a massively nested hierarchy of worlds of detail, each forming the context for even more detailed worlds, and each forming just one detail of much larger-scope worlds. The shape is basically a fractal, or at least that complex -- again, something very easy to write a generating function for, and astoundingly complex in outcome.

So rather than assuming that the primitive parts of the world are separate entities that can be considered and studied in isolation from each other, let's go to the other extreme and check out the space of things that are inseparably tangled into each other and form each other's content and context.

In other words, this is almost the exact complement to what Science has studied to date: those things that are easy to separate from context, bring into the lab, and study in isolation while changing variables one at a time.
We will focus instead on the parts of Life on Earth that doesn't have that property of separability - We want only the part that "goes away" when the live frog is dissected and the parts analyzed on the lab bench, looking for why it moves and acts the way it does.
Very little search has been done there, and yet the essence of a "system" as opposed to a heap or list or collection of parts is that they work together as one, seamlessly. It would help if our language could handle such concepts easily and correctly, making it easy to do correct computations with such primitives, and hard or impossible to do wrong computations with them.

So, rather than search the end of the spectrum where self-energy dominates and interactions occasionally occur, I'd like to start at the other end where interactions dominate and self-energy terms are almost negligible. This is the kind of world that exists at the center of galaxies in Cosmology, for example -- hugely energetic worlds of almost unimaginable power.

Aside for the mathematically inclined: the reason there is so much power is that the equations are non-linear and involve "complex numbers", as opposed to real numbers. The inner product of two vectors in real space is limited to a maximum value of the product of each vector's magnitude, and generally smaller by a "cosine theta" term, where theta is the angle between them. But in general, in complex space, cosine is not bounded by plus or minus one and is part of a complex exponential that is unbounded. The inner product of any two things in the general case turns out to be unbounded and depends only on the relationship between the two things, not really on the size of either one alone. Here's an example.

This is the kind of synergy we are looking for and need to be able to see and capture and model and get to from here. It should be something we can represent in our working model, because if we can't, the model will not help us to find it and we'll miss exactly what we needed to find because our cynical approach to life has blinded us to looking the correct direction.

So, we have so far
1) Team approach
2) inseparable system components operating deep into synergy space
3) pieces "connected" by feedback loops and entrainment / phase-lock loops, not by rigid "connections." The actual arrangement of pieces in 3-D space is almost irrelevant. All that matters is that they are caught up in a dance they are all committed to deeply where each of them is responding in real time and almost uninhibitedly to each of the others.

So, isn't this trying to solve "world hunger"? Isn't this impossibly hard to do and we should pick an easier problem? Not really. That logic is deeply flawed and is one of the greatest dis-services to mankind ever foisted on us.

Here's why. If I try to model the behavior of one molecule, with quantum mechanics, I can do it. Modeling the behavior of 100 molecules is getting hard. 10,000 molecules require a supercomputer. The behavior of a million molecules is out of sight. But .... it comes back around back to easy. Because, say the molecule is "H2O" . Now look at a trillion molecules interacting, also called "water". Suddenly, whoa, strange loop, we are back to easy again.

Now a guy with his butt-crack showing can put in "plumbing" and make this "water" stuff come out our "faucet" thing into our "glass" thingie where we can "drink it." The complexity all vanished into itself, dissolved in place, leaving a rotated and different easy problem in its place. A team of Nobel prize winning scientists with a room of Cray supercomputers can't go there, but the dude with the pipe wrench can. This is the space we need to head for. Forget the Powerpoint and words and equations.

That's what I'm talking about with this interaction-end approach. The reason it seems hard is that we're still trying to use isolated-actor thinking and we need to let go of that and switch from "molecules" to "water" thinking, and then, all the complexity will fall away. This harder harder, off the board harder, and then suddenly easy again transition occurs multiple times as we increase scale - once each cycle in fact. So, yes we need to work where problems are "easy", but the domain of "easy" problems is comprised of multiple, independent, disconnected patches in scale space. We need to let go of the "easy- ground floor" world, enter the elevator or subway, skip the stuff in the middle, and re-emerge at the next "easy-floor 2" world and check out the view from there. Some whole new worlds of "cherry picking" will be ours for the taking.

This is getting way too long, so I'll add one more item and call this a day.

A fourth item to add to the list of things I would like to start with is called symmetry.

The best of all possible worlds would be if the key operations and processes we need to manage have the property that they are scale-invariant. By this I mean that, once we learn a way to look at them, the exact same approach works for whatever scale we are operating at.

So, first we should look for some kind of properties that are equally true of atoms, of water, of a whole planet, of galaxies, etc.

What kind of properties might those be? That's a pretty big range of stuff.

The properties I have in mind aren't the usual physical properties, but are more in the nature of "control" aspects. Regardless of the scale of life, or Life, or LIFE, there are some core feedback loops that are going to be there in any healthy adaptive living system of any scale.

For now, I only really care about living systems. Let's start with that assumption, and skip the dead stuff.

Healthy living systems, of any size, or scale, need to have at least two working feedback loops. I can think of no exceptions, but put this on the table for comment. This will be true of cells, of organs, or organisms, of people, of corporations, of governments, of religions, of movements, whatever it is that is alive or acts like it is alive or acts like it has a life of its own.

One loop is internal. The sensors of the "external world" have to be routed through some pathway to a goal-seeking unit and back to some kind of action-taking units (muscles) in a closed loop so that the living thing can sense the world and respond to it and tell that it has responded. In a corporation or army or nation, the head has to listen to the eyes and senses, and the muscles have to listen to the head, or we can just discard the solution as unstable and long-term unworkable and certainly sub-optimal and unhealthy in an obvious way. We lose no important solutions by discarding those that are so obviously broken and dysfunctional.

The second loop is external. In a tightly coupled world, everything that"I" do will have some kind of corresponding resulting action, on what those around me do. It is a phase-locked dance of a kind. A corporation that is healthy will have a tight coupling with suppliers and customers both. A human that is healthy will have tight coupling with many other people, but at least one other person minimum. In fact, there will also be couplings down the body and up to the larger social unit in a healthy individual.

The strongest correlation in public health, after "smoking causes cancer" is "social disconnection produces bad biomedical outcomes across the board." I will assert without going into detail right here that our whole concept of "an individual" is so deeply flawed that we should simply discard it for this discussion. In the tightly-coupled, feedback-loop dense, phase-locked world of synergy, there is really no such thing as "an individual" any more. Well, there is but there isn't but there is. There is an emergent whole living thing, and that is what we are crafting, and the zero-order terms of "individuals" pretty much drop out of the equations in the steady dynamic state. Outstanding performance is not a property of "outstanding individuals" any more, or even related to "individuals". Life is not describable as "events" so much as by stable dynamic feedback process loops that are self-aware, self-policing, and self-repairing, and mutually supporting.

So, where are we? We're looking for a model of successful corporate structure, which has to include as well all scales, so a model that also works for the embedded humans, as well as for the embedding nations and governments, all at the same time, in a healthy interaction, at a level of "health" that is several orders of magnitude more powerful than Business School even imagines.

We're looking for a model where healthy interaction, mutual support, and synergy dominate the landscape, as opposed to occasionally being spotted briefly somewhere.

We want to know how such a thing would behave, and if we can gain insight from studying that special case, whether we have a clue how to get there from here or not at this time.

So we want multiple people to review how a system, healthy across all scales, would behave and what this world would look like to the embedded humans, as well as to embedded CEO's as well as to embedded Kings over empires of such humans and corporation matrices. The solution should be fully symmetric, so healthy economies and healthy physiologies of the humans are synonymous, not competing trade-offs.

No one could "schedule" or "plan" the interactions, yet we know that the overlapping feedback loops have to be mutually reinforcing and the system has to be dynamically stable. It is likely that some small set of "easy" behaviors of each embedded human, when so multiplied recursively, could generate that overall system behavior.

Maybe more than one such set of generating behaviors exists. At this point, it would be comforting to find just one, any one solution that generates the desired emergent result. We can put that on the table, all stand in the circle, and look at it together until we go "aha!" and see what the magic is.

The solutions we seek need to be crafted and measured and managed in "feedback control phase space", not in the Newtonian separate actor and silo world we have used before to try to conceptualize and control complexity and outcomes. The primitive building blocks are stable, self-sustaining feedback loops, arranged in fractal hierarchies extending out of sight both above and below our level, made tractable by being recursive and symmetric in terms of generating functions.

The "figure" needs to become "ground", we need to stop seeing "parts" and start looking at the "whole" that is still there when the parts are ignored. We need to look at the white space between the boxes on the org chart, or even more so, at the nature of the piece of paper on which the org chart is written. It's as likely, more likely, that the problems we've had with productivity are due to the nature of the paper and concept that different parts are written on "different / disconnected" pieces of paper as to the shape of the org chart or which human we select to put into the "top" position on it.

We will not solve this by modeling ten trillion molecules. We need to let go of that, take the elevator up a few floors, change to "water" conceptualization and lenses in our glasses, and start again fresh from there.

Forget for a moment "what is" and consider "what if". What if every person and every corporation and every government were all interconnected and acting as one living thing? What if the actions were not fragmented or inconsistent or in conflict, but were coordinated and coherent and mutually reinforcing and supportive? What if actions were not forced to be a certain way, but just naturally followed from realizing how interconnected we all were, on every level?

Could that work? Sure. How could it not work in fact?!

The problem before us is not that there is no "final state" we can seek together .. the problem is the stuff in the middle, it's how to get there from here.

And the solution, like the elevator or subway, is that there is no "way", no "direction" that gets us there -- we need to sort of dissolve in place and refocus our energy into a different way of being, and we don't really need to let go of property lines or borders or wealth or values -- the ones that matter will survive that process just fine and the others didn't really matter after all.

It's not a question of "which individual" will be the "boss" or "king" or "on top" of the org-chart of the world, because there is no "top" any more and all of us are connected to all the wealth of the planet so strongly that none of it needs to shift from where it is by force. It will shift, but not because someone or some army forces it to. It will shift because it will simply be obvious to the "owner" that moving it here instead of there will improve things for everyone.

When I consider this solution, I immediately see a high-intensity broadcast jamming signal blocking the concept: a short-circuiting concept of "the Borg", and various other short-circuit images from "socialism" to "communism" to other isms. All those computations are wrong and I am not suggesting any of them. All of those still have a locus-of-control at a human individual level, where it will surely go wrong and be corrupted and destroy part of the world in a misguided effort to bolster another part. Those who protect hard-won wealth and values are wise to be wary of such "solutions" that destroy instead of preserving and growing wealth and prosperity and health at all levels simultaneously.

But any solution that tries to argue which level is most important has missed the boat, missed the message here. This is not about person A versus person B, or about nation A versus nation B, or corporation A versus corporation B, or silo A versus silo B.

This is about removing the "versus" part.

This is about replacing the "or" with "and".

This is about reuniting the macro and micro economies, and the macro health of the nation to micro health of individuals and families and communities, and to the hyper-macro health of the global biosphere and planet and climate.

That's the question, how to get to the final state when so much energy is currently being invested in trying to defend the status quo state against the perceived threats on all sides and fronts.

For that question we need to explore not what a "state" is, but what "transitions" between states tend to look like, and could possibly look like. Like GM's Freemont plant, almost nothing has to change between a terrible state and a fantastic state. We are in reality 99.95% of the way to where we need to be.

It's getting that last 0.05% now that's the focus of the next step. Everyone is terrified they will "lose" something and feels they are so close to the pit, so nearly underwater, that even small losses or increases in load appear life-threatening, probably with good cause.

So, classical transitions in X-Y space aren't the answer. Those are locked down with guards at every gate and sensors monitoring the slightest change.

It's transitions in feedback control phase space that are needed, to move a few "poles"of the equation around and produce dynamic stability, so that people can sense that "it's OK again" and realize the threat is decreasing, not increasing and be correct in that perception.

That's where the next steps need to happen. Everything else is noise or maintenance.
